The present strength of the Maharashtra Vidhan Parishad (Maharashtra Legislative Council) is 78. The member of the same is referred as MLC.
12 members are nominated by the Governor and rests of them are elected indirectly through electoral colleges.
31 members are elected by the Vidhan Sabha members.
21 members are elected by the local bodies of Maharashtra.
7 members are elected by the teachers and the same number of members is elected by the graduates.
It is a continuous House and not subject to dissolution. However, one-third of its members retires every second year and is replaced by new members. As such a member enjoys tenure of six years.
The members of the Vidhan Parishad elect its Chairman and Deputy Chairman. Current Chairman is Shivajirao Deshmukh. |
